VANS CUSTOM CULTURE CONTEST
For this assignment we were given the task of creating a new shoe design for the company Vans. The Vans Custom Culture Contest is a nationwide competition amongst high schools, to help Vans create new shoe designs, while giving the winning school $50,000 to go towards the arts program and also by actually manufacturing the designs to be sold in Vans retail stores.
Each high school is allowed to enter four pairs of shoes (given by Vans and decorated by the schools), one in each category. The four category topics that you can enter into are Music, Art, Action Sports, or Local Flavor.
I decided to do a mixture of Art and Local Flavor, and chose the theme of Dr. Seuss. I thought it represented Art, because it is one of the first art forms you are exposed to as a child, illustrations and poems from books. I also thought it could be Local Flavor because Dr. Seuss wrote many stories while he lived in San Diego.
I started this sketch by looking up pictures from Dr. Seuss books and movies to get an idea of what characters or aspects I would like to include. In my sketch I decided to use a bright and cheery color scheme to match that of Dr. Seuss' famous works. I then found characters like Horton, from Horton Hears A Who and bears and trees from the Lorax for my design. I repeated these ideas several times using different styles of shoe templates, different placements of images, and various color schemes. I then came up with the final sketch above.
