ORIGAMI PROJECT
For this Origami Project, we read the book Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes. Then we chose a origami piece that symbolized what we thought about the book. For me personally, I constantly thought of a star, because the main character of the book had so much determination and hope for the future. I chose to fold paper stars for my origami piece because I was interested in learning some of the geometry behind it, but also because it was a symbol of hope for me. In my life, I look up the stars when I am in need of hope or guidance. I also noticed that a star has been symbol of hope for many different people throughout history. It represents the hope that lives in everyone and is also a reminder that everything happens for a reason and we can’t control everything.
After we learned how to create our origami piece, which I had already learned how to make mine previously this year, we studied the geometry behind all the particular folds. We also applied our knowledge of triangle similarity properties to create mathematical proofs for problems given to us by our teacher. After that we created instructions for our origami pieces and taught it to various elementary school classes. Going through this project really reinforced my understanding of the geometry behind origami and the importance of logical thinking.
